Fiat History
Fiat stands for Fabbrica Italian Automobil Torino, which means Italian Automobile Factory of Turin. Established over a century ago in 1899 by a group of European investors, the firm is currently the sixth biggest motor car manufacturer in the world and has plants in Brazil, Argentina and Poland.
Back in 1902 investor Giovanni Agnelli became the managing director of the company after the firm opened its first ever car-making factory in 1900, which produced 24 vehicles that weren't fitted with a reverse gear. Just a couple of years later the Fiat logo was drawn up and the Fiat Automobile Co. was founded in America marking the expansion of the Fiat brand outside of the confines of Italy.
Production numbers soon increased and other commercial vehicles, such as trucks, trams and marine engines were manufactured with electrical accumulators and cardan transmissions leading to the establishment of the Lingotto factory in 1916, which was the largest car plant of its kind in Europe. Despite experiencing some setbacks during the First World War, the company began growing again in 1923 and mass production techniques were introduced for the first time. Thirty years later the Fiat 1400 diesel was unveiled - the premier diesel engined vehicle created by the Italian manufacturer. In the ensuing years, car greats such as the Fiat 600, the new 500 and the 1800 were produced amongst a mix of other trial models with diverse styles.
In the 1980s the Fiat Uno was produced; a car that matched usability with aesthetic beauty. Shortly after this, the Fiat Punto was launched and named car of the year in 1995. It was re-marketed in 2003 and other models were unveiled in the same period, such as the Fiat Idea Model Year, Seicento MY, Stilo, Multipla and Panda 4x4. Since then the firm has gone from strength to strength and manufactured over 400 models of cars that still combine technological innovation with traditional Italian design. Microcars like the Punto, and Nuovo 500 are now produced by Fiat's operations across a staggering 61 countries. The iconic Panda is next in line for a revamp and will be released in 2011.
