Smart History
The idea for the Smart brand of compact city cars was created in the late 1980s by the CEO of Swatch Nicolas Hayek. Spurred on by Swatch's success, Hayek sought to bring the same manufacturing techniques and personalisation options to the motoring industry but, rather than starting his own company, he decided to approach companies who were already in the automobile production industry. Following a failed deal with Volkswagen and after disappointments from other manufacturers such as BMW and Fiat, he finally signed a seal with Daimler-Benz AG and the Smart brand was born in 1994.
The first Smart factory, affectionately dubbed 'Smartville', was created in December 1994 in Hambach, France, while a second assembly plant was opened in October 1997. The first Smart car to be produced was the Smart City Coupe which was released in October 1998 to the European market. It was designed to be a clever, compact car and was an instant success with consumers. Not long after the launch, Daimler-Benz AG bought Swatch's remaining shares just as the brand was beginning to gain global awareness. The Smart City Coupe's success led to an extension of the Smart model range, with the Smart Roadster, Smart Roadster-Coupe and the Smart Forfour sedan released in 2003, 2003 and 2004 respectively.
The Smart Fortwo is now the only model available from the manufacturer. First released as the Smart City Coupe, the second generation Smart Fortwo was introduced in 2009 and features an automated manual transmission without a clutch pedal, a rear engine and two seats. Looking to the future, Smart are keen to break into the electric-hybrid market. A 'micro hybrid drive' version of the Fortwo was shown at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, while an all electric version of the Fortwo has been in development since 2006.
