Suzuki History
Suzuki started life in 1909 as a weaving loom manufacturer, with founder Michio Suzuki giving his name to the company. Over time weaving looms expanded into motorcycles and after the first half century of existence, the company moved to producing cars under the name of Suzuki Motor Company, Limited. The first mass-produced car was dubbed the Suzulight and available for sale in 1955. It was considered revolutionary with its mechanical features like rack-and-pinion steering and independent suspension.
While Suzuki did open an American leasing agreement in 1963, it was primarily to care for the motorcycle business. At the same time the car design was being overtaken by motorcycles and off-road vehicles. In 1979 Suzuki did release the Suzuki Alto, a car so popular that it is still in production today. They marked the 1980s by looking for foreign expansion opportunities and entered into an agreement with American firm General Motors.
The Suzuki brand was sold under GM's Chevrolet wing and the Suzuki Cultus was renamed the Chevrolet Sprint in 1985. As the suspicion of foreign branding wore off, Suzuki unleashed the Samurai and gained a strong foothold in the American market. At the same time as linking up with America, Suzuki started to promote social responsibility. They looked at two areas; the reduction of pollution and the participation in economic development for countries where Suzuki models were sold, and have attempeted to incorporate the former into their car designs. Throughout its history, the 101 year old company has addressed issues thrown at it and responded in positive fashion. Suzuki has set automotive trends and responded to the demands of customers and the always-altering requirements of drivers worldwide.
